Water Quality Managment Program - WQMP

The Water Quality Management Plan (WQMP) Program is a voluntary certification and cost share program established by the Texas Legislature to help farmers, ranchers, and other landowners protect water quality from agricultural and silvicultural nonpoint source pollution. Nonpoint source pollution occurs when rainfall comes into contact with potential pollutants on the land and carries them through runoff into the waters of the state. Through site-specific conservation planning, WQMPs provide landowners with appropriate management practices, technologies, and conservation measures designed to prevent or reduce pollution in accordance with state water quality standards. Developed cooperatively between landowners and local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs), these plans provide a framework for implementing effective conservation practices while offering landowners and the State assurance that agricultural and silvicultural activities are being managed in a manner consistent with Texas water quality standards. The Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB), in cooperation with local SWCDs, oversees the program and establishes the conservation planning requirements necessary for WQMP certification.
